Space Derby Rules
Taken from the Great Rivers Council, Boonslick District – Pinewood Derby Rules of 2006
ROCKET SPECIFICATIONS AND DESIGN:
- No pieces or parts may be added to the official BSA kit.
- Only one kit may be used to complete the model.
- Kits may contain either balsa wood or foam as the body material. Both materials are acceptable for use.
- There are no rules as to the shape or weight of the rocket.
- The minimum length is 6 1/2 inches.
- Rockets will use rubber bands supplied by Derby officials and will be wound by Derby officials.
- Decals from any source can be used to decorate the rocket. Decals other than official BSA could damage the foam rocket body.
RACE OPERATIONS:
- The derby will be run as a double elimination.
- The decisions of the judges are final.
- The design competition will be judged by a committee of individuals not associated with any of the packs. The Derby committee has the right to disqualify any rocket that does not comply with the rules.
- Emergency repairs will be made by Derby officials only. Derby Committee will not be responsible for damage to rockets.
Possible causes of damage:
- Hangers put in backwards may cause rocket to fly off track
- Propellers in backwards will cause damage to the propeller
- Hanger may pull out of the rocket if the rocket body is thinned too much
- Painted hangers
- PRIZES: Awards will be given to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in each grade group in both race and design.
