Basic Scout Knots & Hitches

Bowline - is one of the most used loop knots and it forms a strong loop that will not slip or jam.  Used in rescue situations to pull up people.

Square Knot
- is also known as Scouting's "joining knot" or "first aid knot".  It joins the ends of two ropes, and has the advantage of strength and ease of tying and untying.

Clove Hitch - is used to attach a rope to a pole. This knot provide a quick and secure result. Often used to start and finish lashings.

Two Half Hitches - used to fasten a rope temporarily to a post, hook, or ring. This knot is made to slip to make the loop bigger or smaller.

Sheet Bend  - a good choice when tying two ropes together, especially when the ropes are different sizes.

Taut-line Hitch
 - is a remarkably useful knot.  It is adjustable & trustworthy. Anyone who uses a tent should know this knot. It is the best way to adjust your lines to the tent-poles.

Timber Hitch - used to attach a rope to a log, and thus drag it where it needs to be. This knot tightens under strain, but comes undone extremely easily when the rope is slack. So be sure to keep it tight.
